Whether you’re an HSP or not

It is important to understand the trait of high sensitivity because 20% of the world’s population is HSP. That means 1 in 5 people you meet will be highly sensitive, so it’s important to understand the trait so you can support yourself or someone you know/love if they have the trait. Who knows, you may end up falling in love with an HSP and knowing about their trait could really help you understand them better.

 

In a nutshell, a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is someone who scores high on a trait called Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS).

It is an inherited (genetic) temperament or personality trait involving an increased sensitivity of the nervous system and a deeper processing of physical, social, and emotional stimuli. Dr. Elaine Aron is a world-renowned Psychologist who has been studying the trait for over 30 years.

 

In lay terms, SPS is a trait that impacts how someone processes information through their nervous system.

When we are sensitive, we can become more easily overwhelmed by the stimulus of the world. Bright lights, loud sounds, strong smells, itchy fabrics on our skin, and strong emotions…to name a few, can send us into overstimulation. It’s like living life in high definition all the time, and it can be stressful to manage at times.

As HSP, this means we need to learn to tailor our lives in a way that accommodates our unique nervous systems. Not knowing about the trait and living with it is a recipe for disaster.

I lived with the trait without knowing for 33 years

My life would have been much less painful and traumatic if I had known about the trait earlier and could accommodate it. This is why I have made it my life purpose to help educate other sensitives about their trait. Learning about the trait is usually the missing piece for most HSPs, and once they have this knowledge, they can start to empower themselves. I love seeing other HSPs have epiphanies when they begin to put their pieces together of why their life has been the way it’s been – extra challenging and stressful.

Authentic Relating and Empowerment

Sensitive people are often perceived by society as delicate, weak, or fragile.

Someone who gets hurt easily, and you need to walk on eggshells around. This is a very limited way to perceive sensitivity, especially when one does not understand the science of sensitivity. Due to the social conditioning many of us have around sensitivity and emotions, we tend to carry negative biases about what it means to be sensitive. This might look like seeing sensitive people as: weak, dramatic, overly emotional, dramatic, needy, easily hurt, delicate, fragile, autistic, or feminine.

In actuality, the sensitive person is dealing with a nervous system that is sensitive to the world around them. The sensitive person needs to learn sensory & emotional regulation/soothing techniques + self-care practices to tend to their sensitivity. Once they learn these strategies, they become better at managing their trait and appear less “sensitive” to others.
